Privacy Policy
Last revised: October 18, 2022
This privacy policy relates to your use of Applus’ wireless OBD services (Services). Applus Technologies, Inc. (“Applus,” “we,”, “us” or “our”) will collect, access, and/or disclose certain types of personal and non-personal information collected in the performance of our Services in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
By using our Services, which include the use of our remote OBD hardware equipment and software applications, including visiting our WirelessOBDbyApplus.com website (Website), or otherwise interact with Applus related to our wireless OBD services, you are accepting the practices described in this Privacy Policy.
Background
Since 1975, vehicle owners in Oregon refer to getting a smog test as going through “DEQ” (Oregon Department of Environmental Quality). They drive their vehicles to one of the agency’s DEQ Clean Air Stations where state inspectors plug in a device to connect newer vehicle’s OBD system to communicate via a cable to DEQ’s computer system. In 2016, the agency initiated an additional testing option which allows private businesses to inspect vehicles without a cable connection to DEQ’s computer system. The option is called DEQ Too™ and it uses wireless telematics technology to remotely transmit data to DEQ’s computer system. Applus is an official wireless telematics equipment provider for Oregon’s DEQ Too program.
The hardware equipment and software applications used by telematics providers are purchased or leased directly by participating business locations – not by DEQ. DEQ maintains a DEQ Too Business Participants List which includes Applus as one of the S-Type Telematics Device Providers. There are over 300 business participants, most of which use Applus equipment and are mostly auto dealerships and device-use businesses such as auto shops and oil change locations. About 15% of Oregon’s DEQ tests are performed at these businesses.
Wirelessly OBD transmitted data is the same as the OBD data collected via cable at DEQ Clean Air Stations
During a traditional test conducted at a DEQ Clean Air Station, the agency’s cable-equipment collects OBD data from vehicles. Likewise, during a wireless remote OBD test, telematics devices are required to transmit the same data that’s collected at DEQ Clean Air Stations. Therefore, a vehicle tested using Applus’ remote OBD device is transmitting the same data that vehicle owners are accustomed to allowing collection of in order to complete their vehicle emissions test. A vehicle’s OBD data does not include license plate information, nor any person/business, name, email, physical address or phone number.
